Air Europa flight cancellation refund / cancellation compensation.
In which situations can you receive refund? In which — compensation? How much is the compensation? When can you get both, compensation and refund? These are the questions we are going to discuss today. There are numerous reasons why airlines, Air Europa including, cancel flights. All you need to know is, if your flight is cancelled due to the airline’s fault, you may be entitled to both – a refund from Air Europa and cancellation compensation up to €600.
In case of Air Europa, it applies to flights to and from Europe.
There are two ways you can claim flight cancellation compensation.
1. Air Europa Flight Cancellation Compensation: EU Regulations
What happens if your Air Europa flight is cancelled?
Will you be provided with a new flight ticket free of charge? Can you get a full refund if you don’t wish to take the new flight? In which situations are you entitled to flight cancellation compensation?
According to EU law, flight cancellation procedures are very specific.
If you are notified of the cancellation 7 – 14 days before the scheduled time of departure:
- You choose a new flight offered by your airline, which departs not more than 2 hours before the original departure time and you reach your destination less than 4 hours after the original arrival time. In this situation you are not entitled to compensation.
- In other situations you are entitled to compensation.
If you are notified of the cancellation less than 7 days before the scheduled time of departure:
- You choose a new flight offered by your airline, which departs not more than 1 hour before the original departure time and you reach your destination less than 2 hours after the original arrival time. In this situation you are not entitled to compensation.
- In other situations you are entitled to compensation.
Could you be entitled to Air Europa flight cancellation compensation?
Yes, as long as the following conditions are met:
- Cancellation must be due to the fault of Air Europa;
- It must be a last-minute flight cancellation (not more than 2 weeks before departure);
- Flight must be to/from Europe (the EU, EEZ and the UK).
By Europe and EU here on this page (and on this website in general) we mean all EU Member States, the United Kingdom (UK), Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, Reunion, Mayotte, Saint Martin (French Antilles), the Azores, Madeira, the Canary Islands, Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland.
1.1 Extraordinary Circumstances
Sometimes reasons for flight cancellations are out of the airline’s control.
Situations like these are known as extraordinary circumstances. In such cases, you aren’t entitled to flight cancellation compensation no matter how last-minute is the cancellation.
If your Air Europa flight is cancelled due to bad weather, nationwide strike, terrorism threat, civil unrest, security issues at the airport, or other similar issues, you can’t get flight cancellation compensation from Air Europa. These events are out of the airline’s control. Air Europa is not responsible for things that it doesn’t have control over.
When it comes to strikes, keep in mind that not always strikes are considered extraordinary circumstances. Airline staff strikes are considered the airline’s fault.
And, yes, make sure to double check what you’re told.
Because not always airlines are telling you the truth. To avoid paying compensation, airlines often refuse by saying that the flight was cancelled due to “extraordinary circumstances”, even if it wasn’t. They often don’t say the real reasons behind flight delay. Be prepared for that if you are claiming compensation yourself. Be persistent. Ask for proof.
If all of this sounds like a hassle, work with a compensation claim company. You won’t have to deal with the airline yourself. All the negotiations will be done on your behalf. Our partners offer such services.
Just fill in the claim form on this website, and our partners will check your flight.
1.2 Right to Care
Your Air Europa flight is cancelled last-minute.
Now you have to wait at the airport for a new flight.
In this case you have a right to care from the airline.
Thanks to the EU Regulation (EC) No 261/2004, all passengers traveling in the EU are protected in case of flight delays, last-minute cancellations and overbooking. If you are stranded at the airport, and you have to wait more than 3 hours for a replacement flight to depart, you have a right to receive care from the airline.
What does it mean for you for you as a passenger?
Air Europa must offer you free meals and drinks in a reasonable relation to the waiting time, two free phone calls, e-mails or faxes. If your new flight is leaving only on the next day, a free hotel stay (including free transfer) must be offered.
It doesn’t affect your chances of getting compensation.
1.3 Air Europa Flight Cancellation Refund, Air Europa Refund Policy
And again, the rules are very specific.
If your flight is cancelled, the airline must offer you a new flight or refund for cancellation. These are the laws in Europe. They aren’t affected by airline policies, in this case, Air Europa internal policies (Air Europa refund policy). If you choose the refund, it has to be paid within 7 days (by bank transfer).
You don’t have to agree to an Air Europa voucher refund.
Here’s an excerpt from the Regulation (EC) No 261/2004:
Regulation (EC) No 261/2004, Article 5
Cancellation
In case of cancellation of a flight, the passengers concerned shall: (a) be offered assistance by the operating air carrier in accordance with Article 8.
Regulation (EC) No 261/2004, Article 8
Right to reimbursement or re-routing
Where reference is made to this Article, passengers shall be offered the choice between: (a) – reimbursement within seven days (b) re-routing, under comparable transport conditions, to their final destination at the earliest opportunity.
It doesn’t cover cases when you cancel your Air Europa flight.
2. How to Claim Air Europa Compensation?
There are two ways how you can claim Air Europa flight cancellation compensation.
One of them is more time consuming, the other – easier.
One of the options is to contact Air Europa directly. Contact Air Europa customer centre. Or use the online dispute resolution form on their website to request flight cancellation compensation. Fill in the form. Give all the details and information about your flight. Keep in mind that it might take a couple of months until the airline gets back to you. It’s not a fast process.

2.1 How Long Does It Take?
If everything goes well, 2 to 3 months.
2 to 3 months from the moment you file a compensation claim until your Air Europa flight cancellation compensation is transferred in your bank account. Keep in mind that it might take longer than that. Not always airlines cooperate and agree to pay compensation straight away.
3. How Much Can You Claim?
The compensation amount in the EU is up to €600 per person.
Here is how you can calculate your Air Europa compensation:
When your destination is within the EU/UK:
€250
If the distance of your flight is
up to 1500 km
€400
If the distance of your flight is between 1500 – 3500 km
When your destination is outside the EU/UK:
€250
If the distance of your flight is
up to 1500 km
€400
If the distance of your flight is between 1500 – 3500 km
€600
If the distance of your flight is more than 3500 km
There’s one exception. When the flight distance is 3500+ kilometres and you reach your destination 3 to 4 hours later than planned, you are entitled only to 50% of the compensation amount (that means €300, not €600).
3.1 Air Europa Voucher Refund or Cash?
What if you are offered a voucher instead of compensation?
According to European laws, compensations and refunds in Europe have to be paid by bank transfer or in cash. So if you are offered Air Europa vouchers as compensation or refund, you can say no. You don’t have to accept them.
4. What Happens If a Flight Is Cancelled?
What to do if your Air Europa flight is cancelled?
First of all, wait for an email from Air Europa.
Usually airlines send emails notifying about flight cancellation. Such emails messages provide information about further steps, such as how to book a new flight and how to get a refund. But what if you are already at the airport? What if it’s a very last minute cancellation you didn’t know about when leaving for the airport? There’s nothing you can do.
Just wait for the announcement from the airline.
In most cases, you’ll be given a choice between a new flight and full refund. If you choose the refund, it must be paid fully to your bank account. Usually refunds are made within 7 days.
Don’t forget that there are situations when Air Europa also has to pay compensation. In case of flight cancellation, compensation has to be paid when the flight is cancelled less than 2 weeks before departure, and it is due to the airline’s fault.
4.1 Connecting Flights
Do you need to be on time for another flight?
If it’s an Air Europa connecting flight, don’t worry. If you miss your connection because your previous flight was delayed or cancelled, Air Europa will book you on another flight free of charge. This is how airline-protected flights work.
But if it’s a self transfer, it’s your responsibility. Self-transfer is separately booked flights. It can consist of two or more flights booked separately, each of them having a different booking reference number. If you haven’t booked your flights under one booking reference (an airline-protected connecting flight), the connection is not protected by the airline. Even if all of these flights are with the same airline. In this case, the airline is not responsible for missed connections.
Travel insurance that covers trip interruptions and changes may cover the costs.
