Are you experiencing a last-minute flight cancellation?
The unexpected cancellation of flights can put passengers in a bind, especially those with onward flights or other travel-related plans. However, passengers are protected under EU law and the Air Europa flight cancellation policy. This has been a longstanding procedure extending over a decade. Thus, if your Air Europa flight is cancelled, it is the obligation of the airline to provide assistance and find a suitable resolution.
1. Air Europa Flight Cancellation: Last-Minute Flight Cancellation
Are you experiencing a last-minute flight cancellation?
Air Europa is responsible for providing assistance if they cancel your flight.
- In case of flight cancellation leading to a prolonged stay at the airport, you have a right to care (i.e., certain free services that Air Europa is obliged to provide). If the delay is 3 hours or longer, you are eligible for a free meal voucher; for overnight delays — complimentary hotel stay and transportation are provided.
- If you opt against taking the alternative flight provided, you have the right to a complete refund from Air Europa. The refund can be either directly deposited to your bank account or issued as an Air Europa voucher.
- For last-minute flight cancellations (i.e., flight cancelled up to 2 weeks prior to the originally scheduled departure), if the cancellation is Air Europa’s fault, you can seek flight cancellation compensation from Air Europa.
In the event of a missed connection due to an Air Europa flight cancellation, compensation may be possible. For more information, see our guide on Air Europa missed connection compensation.
In essence, the procedures are similar to those for flight delays. The key factor is how much later you arrive at your final destination compared to your original arrival time.
These compensation rules are applicable to all Air Europa flights to and from Europe.
By Europe and EU here on this page (and on this website in general) we mean all EU Member States, the United Kingdom (UK), Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, Reunion, Mayotte, Saint Martin (French Antilles), the Azores, Madeira, the Canary Islands, Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland.
2. What to Do if Your Flight Is Cancelled Last-Minute?
Are you experiencing a last-minute flight cancellation?
What happens if your flight is cancelled last minute?
Understanding the appropriate steps to take when your flight is cancelled last minute can depend on where you are when you receive the news. The response could be different if you are already at the airport versus if you are still at home.
2.1 If You Are Still at Home or Hotel
In case you are at home and you receive news of your flight’s cancellation, it is suggested that you stay put. Reach out to Air Europa’s customer service to find out about your next steps.
As we have mentioned before, Air Europa will provide support. They will guide you through your choices – there’s a chance you may be taking off on the same day, or perhaps the next. This is subject to flight availability. Remember, you can also request a flight with a different airline.
If you do not wish to travel anymore, you can request a full refund.
If your flight is cancelled due to Air Europa’s fault, in addition to the aforementioned benefits, you are entitled to receive European flight cancellation compensation.
2.2 If You Are Already at the Airport
If you find yourself at the airport when your flight is cancelled, do not proceed to security.
A substitute flight will be arranged for you. This means that you will need to secure a new boarding pass by going through the check-in process anew. Also, if you have any baggage, you will need to check it in again, and then proceed through passport control. If you have already made it past security, attempt to return to the landside (public access) area of the airport.
It is crucial to reach out to Air Europa’s representatives at the airport to understand the forthcoming steps. They will provide assistance, such as offering an alternative flight to your destination (or a full refund), and care.
