Misplaced luggage is a common concern when flying – your baggage might be lost or may not have been transferred to your subsequent flight on time. No matter the cause, the absence of your luggage is always a hassle.

The first and most crucial step is to report the delayed/missing baggage promptly.

The moment you notice your baggage hasn’t arrived, notify the representative at the luggage claim area. To report a missing bag, provide your passport, boarding pass, and luggage tag (a small sticker generally put on your boarding pass during check-in). Sharing a picture of your suitcase or any extra information can fasten the process, but it’s not mandatory. Even if you have only your passport and boarding pass, you can still file the loss report.

The representative will get your contact details and provide you with a Property Irregularity Report or PIR with a unique reference number for tracking purposes. Make sure you don’t lose this document.

If your baggage is missing, it is typically located within the initial 24 hours. When your bag is found, the airline will get in touch with you to organize a delivery time.

Tracking Your Lost Baggage

At the airport, you have been given a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) that consists of a unique reference number. Keep this carefully as you will need it to trace your baggage.

To verify the status of your missing items, use the airline’s online baggage tracing system. The representatives will provide you with the details upon reporting your lost bag. Important details like your name and PIR are mandatory to use this baggage tracer.

Keep in mind, the number on your baggage tag is not identical to your PIR number. It’s not the same thing.

Baggage Delayed For 5+ Days

If your delayed baggage has not been located within five days of reporting it, reach out to the airline to provide a comprehensive description of the item and its contents. You can do this by completing the list of contents on the airline’s baggage status page (if there’s one), or by providing the list in some other way, as asked by Air Europa.

Reimbursement of Expenses

Don’t forget that you can apply for reimbursement for essential expenses such as toiletries, underwear, and necessary clothes if your baggage is lost.

However, you must keep the receipts for these purchases as they will be needed for filing a claim.

Only basic items are eligible for reimbursement.

The claim must be submitted within 21 days from the date when the lost baggage is received.

Lost Baggage (You Can Get Compensation from Air Europa)

Air Europa has 21 days to find and return your baggage.

If your delayed baggage has not been located within 21 days, it is considered officially lost. Once this happens, you can lodge a claim for compensation with the airline.

You may receive up to €1,300 compensation for lost baggage.

Kindly note that it’s not recommended to store electronics, art, jewellery, etc., in checked baggage, as Air Europa (or any other airline, for that matter) isn’t responsible for reimbursing the full value of such items, only to the extent outlined by the Montreal Convention and its Conditions of Carriage.

When submitting a claim, you must provide your boarding pass, baggage tags, and the Property Irregularity Report (PIR) with your reference number. If you have any additional expenses while waiting for your baggage, you can lodge a claim by supplying receipts for your purchases.

Is Travel Insurance Necessary?

Should you consider getting travel insurance?

While there is no legal obligation to have travel insurance, it can be a beneficial safety net during your travels. Not without a reason so many of us have it when travelling.

Travel insurance can offer a sense of security, especially in unexpected circumstances. There are some very affordable travel insurance policies on the market. Hence, it might be wise to consider purchasing travel insurance or utilizing a travel-oriented debit/credit card that offers insurance benefits.

In situations where your luggage is lost or delayed through no fault of your own, a travel insurance policy may provide reimbursements for necessary purchases. Apart from that, this may be a more smooth process than seeking compensation directly from the airline.

You should always contact your insurance provider before making any purchases, though, and retain all receipts. Reimbursement may not be possible without these receipts. The coverage details of your insurance policy, including whether it provides for delayed baggage, should be clarified with your provider – not all travel insurance covers baggage problems.

How can one gear up for potential luggage loss or delay?

Always ensure you have a set of clothing and underwear in your hand luggage. This becomes particularly important when your trip is to a tropical location where swimwear and suitable climate clothing are required. You won’t want to be walking around in jeans and winter boots in Thailand, Philippines or Costa Rica.

Keeping medications and valuables in your hand luggage is a wise step worth taking. So, in the event of your checked baggage getting misplaced, you aren’t in too much of problem.

Please note that the rules for compensation for lost or delayed baggage with Air Europa are the same as those for other airlines. This is due to the Montreal Convention, which applies to the carriage of baggage on most international flights operated by Air Europa and other airlines globally.
