Once you complete the report, you will receive a Property Irregularity Report and a reference number.

Keep this document, as it is important for tracing your bag online. The process of locating your lost baggage can take up to 24 hours or longer. Your bag will be delivered to your hotel or home address once found.

Tracking Your Lost Baggage

You can monitor the status of your lost bag online.

Use the personal reference number on the Property Irregularity Report (which you received at the airport) to track your bag’s progress online using the airline’s online baggage tracing system.

Once Air Europa personnel have located your baggage, they will reach out to you.

Baggage Delayed For 5+ Days

If your delayed baggage still hasn’t been found after five days, get in touch with the airline and provide a detailed description of the item and its contents. Fill in the list of contents on the airline’s baggage status page, or via an email – follow the instructions of Air Europa.

If your baggage is lost and you have to purchase essential items like toiletries, underwear, and necessary clothing, you could receive a refund for your expenses. This is known as delayed baggage compensation. Keep in mind that you might not receive immediate payment.

Lost Baggage Compensation

If Air Europa cannot find your baggage within 21 days, you might be eligible to receive up to €1,300 in compensation for the lost items. To claim this compensation, you must provide Air Europa with a detailed list of your baggage contents. To ensure nothing is missed, it is recommended to prepare this list in advance.

Compensation from Air Europa will be credited to your bank account. You are not obliged to accept any vouchers. After all, you can’t buy a new suitcase with a voucher, can you?

Packing valuable items such as electronics, art, or jewellery in checked baggage is not advisable because Air Europa only pays up to a limited amount as stipulated by the Montreal Convention and its Conditions of Carriage. They won’t pay for anything more than that.

Is Travel Insurance Necessary?

No, travel insurance is not required to claim lost baggage compensation from an airline. Regardless, possessing travel insurance can add another layer of protection and cover for any expenses incurred due to loss of your luggage, such as buying replacement items or clothes.

Having a travel insurance policy can make your trip less of a hassle, particularly in unexpected situations. Because your insurer will handle most of the issue. Travel insurance is usually affordable or might even be bundled with your debit or credit card benefits.

If the airline is at fault for lost or delayed baggage, you could receive compensation for necessary purchases. You can get reimbursement either from the airline or your insurance provider. Retaining all receipts is crucial when claiming expenses. Insurance claims can be more efficient than claiming with the airline (just another reason why it’s a good idea to have an insurance).

Bear in mind, that not all travel insurance policies cover baggage loss.
